How to Organize Your Home in 2019
With the new year, comes the urge to get more organized. There is even some psychology behind the need to organize and declutter. In fact, researchers at Princeton University found that clutter can actually make it more difficult to focus on a particular task. But the hardest part of organizing your home is determining where to start. So here are a few tips to help you get and stay organized this year.
1. Create a Clear Goal
The first thing is to visualize the kind of life you want in 2019. If you have a clear goal, not only will this will help motivate you, but your specific vision will determine how you organize each room to fit your lifestyle.
2. Gather Tools
Next you will want to gather basic organizing tools such as heavy duty trash bags and boxes or bins for sorting. Also, have paper and pen handy to make a list of things to buy or replace and take notes of those to-do items that pop into your head while you are sorting.
3. Establish an Area for Sorting
You will need a large empty space to create visibility and help you make decisions when sorting items. This could be a large dining table, large bed or even a designated area of the floor.
4. Determine your First Project
So now that you have your tools and sorting area ready, which room should you tackle first?
Think of the areas that will have the greatest impact on your daily life. You will want to organize the kitchen you you can cook meals, the laundry room so you can wash clothes and then the bedroom so you can sleep comfortably.
Once those rooms are done, move onto rooms that are used less often, such as guest rooms or hobby areas.
5. Don’t be Afraid to Purge
Getting rid of clutter can be difficult, especially since we often attach emotional feelings to items. But try your best to donate or throw away unwanted or unneeded items. A lot of times clutter will be hidden away in closets and we don’t realize how much we are accumulating. The problem with this is, those unneeded items are taking up closet space which could otherwise be used for those needed items that you can’t find a home for.
6. Practice a Daily or Weekly Cleaning Routine
The key to staying clean and organized is to create a cleaning routine and stick with it. Everyone’s routine will vary depending on their lifestyle.
If you can clean a little bit every single day. If you stick to this you will find that you won’t have to spend much time each day because you are staying on top of any mess. Or you may find it easier to dedicate one day to each task. For example, Mondays mop, Tuesdays vacuum, Wednesdays laundry etc.
