How to Transition Your Home from Summer to Fall
It’s that time of year that is bittersweet. The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder, but it is the perfect time to cozy up with a hot cocoa and good book. It’s time to bring out the sweaters, jackets and boots and say goodbye to your summer clothing. Just as you switch up your wardrobe, there are certain things you can change in your home to create a warm and comfy ambiance throughout the fall and even winter months.
Switch Bedding, Blankets and Other Fabrics
Replace cotton fabrics for linens, velvet blankets, faux furs and other soft knits. Remove any pillows or accessories that have a light summer feel and replace with items that add coziness and texture to the room.
Soften the Lighting
The amount of lighting can have a huge impact on the entire ambiance of a room. In the evening, go for soft lighting such as lamps of 40 watts or less. Or lit candles can really create a feeling of warmth and relaxation.
Layer your Rooms
You will certainly be layering your clothing during the Autumn months, but what about layering your rooms? There is something about layering certain decor that gives the room a warmer feel. How do you add layers? Doing something as simple as adding throw pillows and blankets to your couch can add depth and comfort. You can also add an area rug or even pair rugs of different textures together.
Add Autumn Scents with Potpourri
You can create your own scents by cooking your favorite fall flavors such as orange, apple, cranberries and cinnamon. Not only will your home smell great while you are baking the potpourri, these lovely scents can lasts for months, depending on what blend you choose.
Don’t Forget Fall Accents and Fun Accessories
Now for the fun part – mixing in accents and other accessories. For fall decor, use natural elements such as pumpkins, leaves and branches. Not only do these pieces create the perfect autumn feel, they are often easy on the budget. In fact you can even make a family project of gathering items from outdoors.
Also, you can easily repurpose your spring and summer displays by adding fall pieces inside. When Christmas gets closer, simply replace with greenery or other winter decor.
