Metro Detroit Interior Decorator Explains How to Make Small Rooms Look Bigger

Whether you live in an apartment, condo or house that has rooms on the smaller side, there are some decorating tips that can trick the eye into believing the room is larger than it actually is.

Keep reading as Metro Detroit interior decorator, Marianne Porth gives tips on how to create more space even in crammed quarters.

1. Use Light Colors or Mix Light and Dark Colors

Painting walls a light color will instantly make any room appear larger. You can also combine bright whites with dark colors to create depth, resulting in an illusion of more space.

2. Utilize Multi Purpose Furniture Pieces

One way to create more space is to use furniture that will serve more than one purpose. For example, some ottomans can provide function and comfort as they will double as a storage area inside. Or if possible, build a window seat that will not only provide extra seating for guests but allows for storage underneath.

3. Hang Curtains from Floor to Ceiling

Hanging long curtains creates the illusion of a higher ceiling even in the smallest spaces.

4. Hang Larger Wall Decor

Instead of creating a gallery wall with multiple pictures, go for one single large piece instead. This will make the wall appear larger and make the room feel less crammed and cluttered.

5. Use Multiple Lamps to Distribute Light Evenly

Rather than rely on one overhead light, multiple light fixtures can make the room feel bigger – especially for rooms that do not receive a lot of  natural light.

6. Use Area Rugs

Did you know that simply adding an area rug can make the room appear as if it has more square footage?

7. Use Large Statement Pieces of Furniture

Although many may think that larger pieces of furniture will decrease the amount of space, the opposite can be true in certain rooms. For example, a king size bed can create the illusion of a larger bedroom.

8. Buy Furniture With Exposed Legs

Doing something as simple as choosing furniture with exposed legs can create the illusion of more space in a room.
